49ers’ Offensive Coordinator Mystery Solved: But There’s a Shocking Twist
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said he would announce Klay Kubiak as the team’s offensive coordinator earlier this week. However, according to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, NFL rules do not allow such an announcement.
The 49ers must conduct an open search and interview process for the position. After a search, the franchise could then name a hiring.
“Klay’s done as much as anyone on offense for these last two years,” Shanahan said. “So, this was his second year doing that, and he gets better and better each year at it. Just hasn’t had the official title yet. And now he’ll get the official title, which he more than deserves, but it’s more about recognizing what he’s already been doing, and doing at a high level.”
San Francisco doesn’t officially have an offensive coordinator. Mike McDaniel held the position in 2021 but became the Miami Dolphins head coach after that season. The position has since gone unfilled.
On the 49ers’ coach roster, after Shanahan is listed as head coach, Chris Foerster is listed next as the run game coordinator and offensive line coach.
Kubiak, who has been with the 49ers since 2021, is listed as the offensive passing game specialist.
The son of Gary Kubiak, the former head coach of the Houston Texans and Denver Broncos, Klay began his career in San Francisco as the team’s defensive quality control coach before being named the assistant quarterbacks coach.
