Shocking Release: Former Starting QB Let Go, Rams’ Future at QB Uncertain
The Los Angeles Rams are headed toward an impasse. They have an aging quarterback and no clear succession plan. Sitting at five and five, 11 weeks into the season the team seems more interested in a playoff push rather than tanking for a high draft pick. This leaves them with an even smaller needle eye to thread.
Can they afford to kick the can down the road even further than they already have?
Daniel Jones Is a Low Risk-High Reward Bet For the Rams
One possible option has presented itself in the form of Daniel Jones being released by the New York Giants. Because he was released, if he clears waivers, he will likely sign for a league minimum to be rostered on an NFL team for the remainder of the season.
This makes Jones a low-risk signing that could pay dividends in the near future.
The Rams currently have Jimmy Garoppolo under contract as their backup quarterback on a one-year $3.2 million contract. Cutting Garoppolo and signing Jones would allow the Rams to save a few million dollars in cap space, but also be an upgrade as a backup to Matthew Stafford.
While Jones has yet to look like a consistently competent quarterback, he has several abilities that Garoppolo doesn’t have: mobility and high-end arm strength.
Sitting behind Stafford and learning in the Sean McVay offense could be exactly what Jones needs to rehabilitate his career. It would also give the coaching staff the chance to evaluate his abilities in-house.
In his best season, Jones completed 67 percent of his passes for 3205 yards with 15 touchdowns and just five interceptions.
