Arsenal are now about to do something they have never done before in Premier League history
The Gunners remain the only side ever to record an unbeaten campaign in the Premier League, while the north Londoners are also responsible for finding some of the greatest players to ever appear on these shores, such as Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Dennis Bergkamp.
Now – however – Arsenal are about to make a new footnote in their Premier League history…
Arsenal set for a Premier League first
Arsenal are now set to wear their away shirt in a north London derby for the first time ever in the Premier League.
Not since 1986 – 38 years ago – have the Gunners worn a kit other than their traditional red and white home strip in north London derby clashes against Tottenham, whether the event be played home or away.
Of course, the Premier League only began in 1992 – so it will be the first time in the Premier League era that Arsenal do not wear their home shirt against Tottenham.
So, why is this happening?
Arsenal have explained in an official statement that both the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) and the Premier League believe the 2024/25 home kit features “too much white” – meaning it was expected to clash with Tottenham’s home shirt.
As a result, Mikel Arteta will see his side adopt the black adidas away kit, which the Gunners wore recently when recording a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Villa Park.
The PGMOL and the Premier League’s verdict will also mean Spurs have to wear their away shirt at the Emirates Stadium for the reverse fixture in January.
Mikel Arteta has a headache
Arteta has a number of problems on his mind ahead of Sunday’s north London derby.
Firstly, Arsenal will definitely be without Declan Rice after his red card in the 1-1 draw against Brighton last time out.
Furthermore, the Gunners are also expected to lose Martin Odegaard for this clash, after the Arsenal No.8 suffered ankle damage while on international duty with Norway.
Clearly, the midfield department will need to be reshuffled, as Arteta will be without two of his most influential players in N17 this Sunday.
