Maybe it’s what Jordan Phillips didn’t say that the Dallas Cowboys should be listening to.
The Buffalo Bills will look to reach 11 wins for the fifth-straight year and continue their best season start since 1991 when they face the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.
Despite the Bills losing a lot of veteran personnel in the offseason, the team has looked just as competitive, if not more so, than in recent years.
When asked about why the team has been so historically successful, defensive tackle Jordan Phillips – who rejoined the club in-season after being released by Dallas – credited the culture.
“They let you do what you are here to do,” Phillips said. “There’s no outside nonsense, there’s no, ‘Uh, you gotta worry about making this person happy, you gotta put on a certain face to make Sean (McDermott) happy.’ Be on time, be respectful, and play good football, and you’re gonna thrive here in Buffalo. And that’s a real culture thing. It’s not about, you know, money, I guess, you know? You’re here to win football.”
He isn’t coming right out and saying it, but critics of the Jerry Jones-led Cowboys will certainly try to read between the lines here. “Outside nonsense”? “Put on a certain face”? “It’s not about money”?
We coined the phrase, “Sometimes the Dallas Cowboys seem like a marketing company that plays football on the side.” Is that the “culture” to which Phillips is referring?
Phillips joined the Bills midseason after he was released by the Cowboys, but it isn’t his first year with the team. He had two previous stints with the Bills, one from 2018 to 2019, and a second one last season.
After he re-joined the Bills team earlier in the season, Phillips – who in fairness may harbor some bitterness about his brief time here or may simply feel a comfort level being back in Buffalo – raved about the environment in Buffalo.
“Seeing the smiles, and being actually wanted, it’s a hell of a drug, you know what I mean? You can do a lot for people when it’s in the right environment,” said Phillips in November. “I’m an acquired taste, and (the Bills) like my taste.”
