From Wild Card to LA: Julian Fernández Signs Minor League Contract with Dodgers

Even when factoring in ongoing negotiations with Teoscar Hernández and the wait for his decision in free agency, the Los Angeles Dodgers have been plenty active this offseason.

Their spending began with agreeing to a five-year, $74 million contract extension and continued with the signing of Blake Snell for five years and $182 million.

Those deals were followed by adding Michael Conforto on a one-year pact and re-signing Blake Treinen to a deal through the 2026 season.

All the while the Dodgers continued to fill out their organizational depth as well. The latest move in doing so was through signing Julian Fernández to a Minor League contract with a non-roster invite to 2025 Spring Training, per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic.

Prior to Fernández, the Dodgers also signed the likes of Matt Sauer, David Bote, Giovanny Gallegos, Joe Jacques and Justin Jarvis to respective Minor League contracts with non-roster invites to big league camp.

Most of the aforementioned players figure to make the bulk of their contributions with Triple-A Oklahoma City but conceivably could be options for the Dodgers at some point throughout the 2025 season as well.

Julian Fernández bio and stats

Fernández originally signed with the Colorado Rockies as an international free agent in July 2012. The right-hander then joined the San Francisco Giants as the second pick in the Rule 5 Draft in December 2017. He remained with the organization until joining the Miami Marlins one year later.

Fernández was returned to the Rockies in October 2019 and proceeded to make his MLB debut with the team in 2021. Fernández since went on to pitch in the Toronto Blue Jays organization.

The 6’6 reliever largely struggled in his six appearances for Colorado, allowing a combined eight runs on nine hits, including two homers, and issuing four walks in just 6.2 innings.

Fernández is a career 4-5 with a 6.05 ERA in 79 games at the Triple-A level.
