Sirianni on the Hot Seat: Eagles’ Coach Faces Uncertain Future Amid Job Status Concerns

Will Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni be back on the hot seat with an early postseason exit?

Sirianni has largely quieted his critics and much of the noise surrounding the organization potentially moving on from from his services as head coach that had hung around after the 2023 season. Now 13-3 heading into Week 18, and the Eagles have all but secured their spot in the playoffs.

However, that doesn’t mean his job is completely safe as the playoffs loom.

“It’s hard to say, but it’s a question some people around the league are wondering,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler wrote ahead of Week 18. “Sirianni’s 47-20 record is impressive. Yet his standing was a talking point coming off a tumultuous 2023 campaign, and he doesn’t have a contract extension in place. The sideline and on-field spats are sort of hard to ignore.

“Any firing here would be a sizable upset, but if we’re talking surprises, this would be one to list because his status was a regular debate four months ago.”

After leading the Eagles to the Super Bowl in 2022 — a heartbreaking 38-35 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs — Philadelphia followed that up with an 11-6 season that saw them finish second in their division and unceremoniously eliminated from the playoffs in the wild card round to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The 32-9 loss to Tampa on the road was the lasting memory Eagles fans had of Sirianni and their team over the course of the offseason. After the success they had the year prior in the postseason, it was a dissapointing outcome for Philadelphia.

Now, one year later, Sirianni’s squad has locked up the No. 2 seed in the NFC behind the Detroit Lions and will rest their starters for their Week 18 matchup against the New York Giants at home.

While the Eagles’ playoff opponent has yet to be set in stone, getting to rest the starting lineup ahead of what Jeremy Fowler believes could be a make-or-break matchup in the Sirianni era already gives them a leg up.

Looking to get quarterback Jalen Hurts back in time for the postseason, as well as keeping the likes of Saquon Barkley and AJ Brown, among others fresh and rested will be paramount in getting past the first weekend of the postseason.
