CY Young Savior: Braves Urged to Sign 3-Time Award Winner After Free Agency Setback
The Atlanta Braves have lost both Max Fried and Charlie Morton in free agency. They also expect to be without Spencer Strider to start the season. They could make a move for a cheap starter before the season starts.
With Chris Sale leading the way, the Braves rotation is far from doomed. However, losing Fried and Morton cannot be overlooked. They need to find a cost-effective way to build a rotation around Sale and Strider. They missed out on the opportunity to sign Justin Verlander, who signed a one-year, $15 million deal with the San Francisco Giants. FanSided’s Christopher Kline urged the Braves to pivot and sign a different future Hall of Famer: Max Scherzer.
“Scherzer, another three-time Cy Young winner and two-time champ, would bring decades of winning experience and a recent track record of success to Atlanta,” wrote Kline. “He, too, dealt with injuries last season, but Scherzer was an All-Star as recently as 2021. He posted a 3.95 ERA across nine starts and 43.1 innings in 2024, which is perfectly respectable, if a small sample size.”
Scherzer’s resume speaks for itself. The Braves would not be looking for him to pitch like he did in his prime, but rather as a piece of their rotation. A healthy Scherzer as the third or fourth starter is a great position to be in.
