McCarthy’s Next Chapter Revealed: Surprise Suitor Emerges for Cowboys’ Coach
Mike McCarthy is expected to return to the Dallas Cowboys for the 2025 season. In the event the two sides can’t work out a new deal, he’ll have interest from other NFL teams.
Earlier this week, the Chicago Bears requested permission to speak with McCarthy. Since the Cowboys have exclusive negotiating rights with him until Jan. 14, they declined that request. That has many people believing a deal will get done soon. If it doesn’t though, another NFC team could emerge as a suitor for the Super Bowl-winning coach.
On a recent episode of “Off The Bench,” Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football mentioned the New Orleans Saints as a team possibly interested in McCarthy.
“If Dallas opens up and McCarthy goes on the market, how does that shake up things everywhere? If he hits the market, I’d expect the Saints to try to interview him,” Underhill said. “I don’t think they’ll jump into that until that situation resolves itself.”
McCarthy has history with the Saints that’s worth noting. He was the team’s offensive coordinator from 2000-2004, so he at least knows how general manager Mickey Loomis operates.
As of right now, the Saints can only pursue McCarthy if the Cowboys fail to secure a deal before Jan. 14.
McCarthy has been the head coach of the Cowboys since 2020. Prior to this season, he took the franchise to the playoffs three straight years. However, they never made it past the divisional round.
After the regular-season finale for the Cowboys, McCarthy made it known that he’d like to remain in Dallas.
“I have a lot invested here, and the Cowboys have a lot invested in me,” McCarty said. “And then there’s a personal side to all these decisions. So, they all point in the right direction.”
On the bright side for McCarthy, he’ll be a hot commodity this offseason regardless of what the Cowboys do.
