Sean McDermott on the Hot Seat! Bills Coach Faces Super Bowl Pressure
The Buffalo Bills have again positioned themselves for a deep playoff run after securing the No. 2 seed.
But this is nothing new for Buffalo under head coach Sean McDermott, who boasts an 86-45 regular season coaching record. However, the Bills have struggled in the playoffs, going 5-6 in his tenure.
Having made the playoffs in seven of his eight years as coach, the Bills have been constants in the Super Bowl chase, with 11+ regular-season wins in their last five seasons.
But they’ve failed to get past the AFC Championship game, which they’ve only been to once, in 2020. So, is there an element of unfinished business for McDermott and his Bills in 2024?
“Every year’s different, and every team takes on its own identity, so I would say yes and no,” McDermott said. “I’d say yes because it is in our history of not getting to accomplish our ultimate goal year to year. But at the end of the day, we’ve had a lot of success and it’s a hard thing to win in this league. You’re looking at an AFC that is loaded with high-level teams, and it starts right from the start with week one for us of a really good football team in the Denver Broncos.”
With Josh Allen playing MVP-caliber football and the Bills’ defense, despite its critics, doing just enough, Buffalo is well-equipped to slay Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, something it has already done this season.
There will be pressure on Buffalo this postseason to make the most of yet another great opportunity to get to a Super Bowl, and McDermott clearly wants the page in the franchise’s history to be turned.
Indeed, if they don’t do so? McDermott might find himself on the hot seat. … the result of being as successful as he has been without having gotten to the Big Game.
