Every word Mikel Arteta said on Trossard red card, referees, White, Calafiori and Arsenal mood
Pep has said you’re one of the best teams in the world. What’s your reaction to that?
They are probably the best in the world.
We had a very difficult start. We struggled to control certain spaces we didn’t have enough ability to get out of the first 25, 30 meters of the pitch which meant that we never controlled the game. After that we understood what we had to do better and we came back in the game and were winning it. Then when we were at our best moment in the game we were given a context that makes it almost impossible for 56 minutes.
Anyway, we adapted to that context in the best possible way. The way the team competes is unbelievable. I’m so proud of them. You cannot be thrown in a more difficult situation against that kind of opponent. The way we handled that situation was unbelievable. I’m so proud of them.
What did you make of the red?
I prefer not to comment. I’ve seen it and it’s that obvious so I’ll leave it to you guys. I was already in big trouble trying to solve what happened on the pitch. It’s not my problem to solve what happens off the pitch.
There was another instance of the ball being kicked away featuring Doku…
That’s what I’m saying. It’s that obvious that it’s not necessary to comment on it. It’s the second time. I’m expecting 100 Premier League games to be, 10 against 11 or nine vs 10 this season. Let’s see.
Is the atmosphere in the changing room more disappointment at what happened at the end or pride?
It was [disappointment]. The boys were very gutted. They put so much. They put their heart and soul in to every action. Then to be punished in the last minute – well it was 97, then it was 99 – they were gutted. They know as well that they have made another big step today to do what they’ve done as individuals here.
Were Timber and Calafiori OK?
We have to adapt. They have played 90 minutes in this context that’s for sure, especially with what they’ve had to do in the last. Everybody is so willing to help the team. We will find solutions.
Was Ben White carrying an injury?
Yeah. We didn’t want to [play him that long], but we had to. I spoke to him yesterday and I wanted to protect him. He’s not going to ever tell you that he’s not fit. He will run through a brick wall for you. The intention was not to use him today. But I’m very grateful because he performed extremely well.
What is your response to Haaland throwing the ball at Gabriel’s head?
No.
What did you think of Haaland’s reaction
I don’t know. I think they expressed their emotions and that’s it, like we did when we scored our goals.
What did you make of Calafiori?
He was great. To have the first Premier League game in this context, chapeau. He’s got so much personality, so much energy. The quality that he has shown today, really impressed with us.
Is a yellow card for kicking the ball away not fair?
I prefer not to comment. You analyse the situation and how long it takes.
Do you feel you’re not allowed to have an opinion?
I have if I want to. Today I don’t want to.
Was the 99 minutes not a consequence of your team time wasting
