Despite the loss of Luka Doncic the biggest trade in NBA history appears to have provided the Dallas Mavericks with one clear positive.
While Mavericks fans are still letting their anger be known, in the form of banners and returned season tickets, wins on the court could quickly ease the pressure on the organization.
Following the team’s overtime defeat to the Sacramento Kings, coach Jason Kidd did not speak to the media in a move which Lou Williams was critical of.
But a crucial 111-107 win over the Golden State Warriors will do wonders for the team’s morale, and while Kyrie Irving stole the show, it’s Max Christie who is proving a worthy trade.
Christie breaks new ground
Fitting into a new team is never a quick process, but former Lakers star Christie seems to have taken to life in Dallas like a duck to water.
Klay Thompson has been a big fan of Christie’s arrival warning opponents that you can’t leave him open. It seems the Warriors weren’t listening to their former three-time Championship winner.
Christie dropped a 17-5-4 performance which included shooting 6-12 from FG range, in doing so the 22-year-old broke new career ground.
The shooting guard has now dropped the most consecutive 15-point games of his career with five, all coming since joining the Mavericks.
He’s certainly impressed Irving who has praised the youngster for his instant impact on the team.
His shining performances have eased the pressure on the trade somewhat following the injury that Anthony Davis picked up in his Mavericks debut. Danny Green has stated his concern over the future fitness of Davis when he does return from his injury, as Green noted it made him ‘less athletic.’
Irving holding it down in Dallas
While the Mavericks may have lost a superstar in Luka they still possess one of the most talented ball players in the league in Irving.
Kyrie was happy to play second string to Luka when the pair shared the court he stepped up in a big way during the Slovenian’s injury lay-off helping the team to keep afloat.
The former NBA Champion dropped no fewer than 42 points in the win over the Warriors shooting 15-25 FG and 70% from behind the arc.
It’s safe to say that the Mavericks are in safe hands if they can continue to get quality around Irving who was praised by Steph Curry for his performance.
Curry told the media: “That’s what great players do they respond to adversity and changes, as wild as they might be. If you give guys like that, especially in the first half where we had a couple of breakdowns, that just gives him even more life and energy than when he came into the game.
“He made a lot of big shots and when he gets going he’s kind of hard to stop.”
Irving and the Mavericks will be looking to continue their momentum against a Miami Heat side who have lost their last three games.
The Warriors on the other hand will be looking to get back to winning ways in a tough game against a Houston Rockets side who appear to have refound their rhythm.
