Mets’ Brandon Nimmo on why he ran his mouth at Phillies
PHILADELPHIA — When cameras caught Mets left fielder Brandon Nimmo chirping at Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto after his seventh-inning home run, onlookers were surprised.
Nimmo is about as wholesome a man as the Midwest could produce. He doesn’t cuss, ends his answers with a polite “sir” or “ma’am” and walks up to the plate to gospel music. So the idea that the Cheyenne, Wyoming, native engaged in some trash talk in Game 2 of the NL Division Series didn’t make sense.
Even Realmuto couldn’t believe it when it happened. He just stared at him, confused.
“To be honest, I don’t know (what he was saying),” Realmuto said after the game. “He said something about (Cristopher) Sánchez. But I don’t know what he was saying. I just nodded. … I didn’t say a word. He mentioned Sánchez’s name but It was so loud in the ballpark. I didn’t know what he was saying.”
