Breaking News: Patriots Make an Offseason Overhaul, Releasing Four Players, Clearing the Way for New Talents
The New England Patriots are making plenty of noise in the offseason.
The team is shaping up to be one of the most improved clubs heading into the 2025 NFL Season after bringing in standout players, such as defensive tackle Milton Williams, cornerback Carlton Davis III, and linebackers Robert Spillane and Harold Landry III.
New head coach Mike Vrabel is continuing to shape up his team in other ways, even if that means releasing current players on the roster — and that’s exactly what the Patriots did on Friday.
The team announced it released four players : linebackers Curtis Jacobs and Andrew Parker Jr., tackle Caleb Jones, and center Lecitus Smith. Only Jacobs and Smith appeared in games last season for New England.
Jacobs, 23, tallied nine games with two starts. He finished the season with one tackle on defense and three tackles on special teams. Late in the 2024 NFL season, Jacobs was placed on injured reserve.
Smith, who was signed off Green Bay’s practice squad in October 2024, played in eight games for the Patriots. The 26-year-old earned a unique start as a tackle-eligible tight end against the New York Jets.
Parker and Jones signed futures contracts with New England on Jan. 6. Both have spent time with the franchise on the practice squad.
The Patriots have not announced if they will return any newly released players. However, with the 2025 NFL Draft approaching, the team can address these positions with any of its six picks.
