The New York Mets picked up their first win of the 2025 MLB season on Friday, defeating the Houston Astros by a final score of 3-1. While star shortstop Francisco Lindor went hitless in three at-bats, he saw his new $765 million teammate Juan Soto homer for the first time in a Mets uniform.
Crushing a solo shot in the third inning, Soto deposited a ball 390 feet from home plate into the right field seats. The swing was a look at what Mets fans can expect for the next 15 years, but also a reminder of a difficult decision the team faces.
Before the season, there was some buzz around the idea of New York potentially naming a team captain for the first time since David Wright retired in 2018. While Lindor was a worthy candidate, the Mets faced a tough decision given their unique leadership dynamic and the arrival of a new superstar.
“The current situation is different, with two long-standing leaders in Lindor and Nimmo, a high-profile newcomer in Soto and several other veterans who garner outsized respect,” Anthony DiComo of MLB.com wrote earlier this month.
The Mets opted not to name a captain before the season began, but also did not formally rule out doing so down the line. Lindor spoke on this during an interview with GQ earlier this week.
“I would love it,” Lindor admitted. “I would accept it. I think it would be—no, I don’t think, I know it’s an honor. It definitely would mean something to me.”
Given who Wright was for New York, naming a captain for the first time since his retirement would be a major decision for the Mets. It’s one they now face with Lindor continuing his emergence as a worthy candidate.
