Jameson Williams’ Opens Door for Rookie to Shine
The Jameson Williams suspension absolutely sucks for the Detroit Lions. He has become a big part of this team’s offense this season and now he’s going to be out for the next two games. The Lions will miss him against the Titans, but they could miss him even more against the Packers the following week.
You hate to say there’s a bright side to this because it feels liek there couldn’t possibly be one, but there is one. The Lions may now get to see what undrafted rookie Isaiah Williams can do in Jamo’s stead.
Williams was a guy going into the draft that was expected to get drafted, but that didn’t wind up happening and the Lions swooped in and grabbed him. He made a big impression in training camp and then made an even bigger impression during the preseason.
In three games he racked up 11 catches for 123 yards on 14 targets. You really got to see the yards after the catch ability that he ran all over the Big Ten with when he was at Illinois.
That YAC ability is exactly why you give Williams a shot this week. He made the Lions 53-man roster, but hasn’t been active yet. This week he has a real shot because he can bring some of what Jameson Williams can do on the field.
Obviously he does not have the unbelievable speed that Jameson Williams possesses, but he does have a knack for just getting himself down field and making moves in space. 82 of the 123 yards he had in the preseason came after the catch. He can be shifty for sure.
The Lions will obviously look to use Amon-Ra St. Brown, Tim Patrick and Kalif Raymond more. They might even throw in some Allen Robinson, but I wouldn’t at all be surprised if we see Isaiah Williams on the field making a play or two against the Titans on Sunday.
