Dallas Mavericks forward Klay Thompson recently made history during their 108-102 defeat against the Houston Rockets on Thursday night, as he became the sixth NBA player to record 2,500 career three-pointers.
The historical shot came during the final period, as the Dallas Mavericks attempted to make a comeback. With less than four minutes left in the game, Kyrie Irving drove baseline and kicked the ball out to Klay Thompson, who let it fly despite Fred VanVleet’s short closeout.
As of this writing, the only five players ahead of Thompson are his former Golden State Warriors teammate Stephen Curry, Ray Allen, James Harden, Damian Lillard, and Reggie Miller.
According to Stat Mamba, Klay Thompson is the second-fastest player in NBA history to reach this milestone, as it only took 798 games. Again, the only player ahead of Thompson is Stephen Curry (702 games).
Dallas Mavericks came up short against the Houston Rockets
The Dallas Mavericks are now 3-2 to start the 2024-25 NBA campaign following this latest loss against the Houston Rockets in a game that saw them on the back foot after a slow start.
Dallas was playing catch-up because they only shot 2-for-12 on three-pointers in the first half, and the center duo of Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II was plagued by foul trouble. The Houston Rockets also outrebounded the Dallas Mavericks 50-37 and outscored them 20-8 on second-chance points.
They almost completed a successful comeback in the final period when Luka Doncic knocked down a three-point shot with 1:08 left to pull Dallas within three, but Amen Thompson put the nail in the coffin for Houston with a fadeaway with 43 seconds remaining.
