Punt Blocker, Heart Steeler: Coady White Wins Over…
Cody White had played 201 total snaps before Week 9 against the Los Angeles Rams. He came out of that game as the second most interesting player on the field for the Seattle Seahawks.
Who is Cody White?!
With DK Metcalf and Noah Fant out, Cody White was called up from the practice squad for the game against the Rams.
He had not seen the field yet this season. Believe it or not, he never saw the field last season either.
The last time Cody White saw an NFL field was in Week 12 of 2022. He had 10 snaps on offense, nine on special teams, and one reception for two yards.
On Sunday, he doubled that for two receptions, except they went for 44 yards.
Only seven blocked punts had occurred before then, so this is a pretty rare feet. White could have almost grabbed the ball out of the air and run away with it.
Where did White play before he went to the Seahawks?
White comes to the Seahawks after two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but he’s actually been in Seattle for a minute. He sat on the practice squad all of last year. November 3rd was his Seahawks debut.
Before that, White played three years for Michigan State, leaving after 2019 to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted agent.
They signed but released him that preseason. As did the New York Giants. As did the Denver Broncos.
White hasn’t yet made even $1.5 million over five years in the NFL, and today was a feel-good much-needed bright spot in a game that was drastically overshadowed by highs, lows, and disasters, from every offensive lineman some of the bigger names on the team.
His receiver skills were duly noted this game. Both his catches were fun and impressive, and that sideline 2-minute drill catch was phenomenal.
Where does White go from here?
I have two speculations.
To be perfectly honest I wouldn’t be surprised if the staff considered him above Jake Bobo and everyone below on the depth chart. Bobo, along with Shenault and everyone else, haven’t done much of anything this season.
I also would hazard a guess that such a move internally, wouldn’t change anything of significance on the field.
When DK Metcalf comes back, this team doesn’t have the offensive line to handle more than three reads, that much has been abundantly clear all season. Geno Smith is struggling out there under all the pressure.
But take the special teams play with some clear talent, and a nice win for me coming out of this game would be to see White get some elevations or hopefully earn a roster spot. Here’s the journey he’s been on to date:
