Padres build stability with Manager’s two-year extension
The San Diego Padres have signed manager Mike Shildt to a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the franchise through 2027, the team announced Wednesday.
The news comes on the heels of Shildt leading the Padres to a postseason in which they swept the Atlanta Braves in the wild-card series before losing to their division rival and eventual World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in five games in the National League Division Series.
Shildt, 56, previously managed the St. Louis Cardinals from 2018-21, leading the franchise to three postseason appearances in four seasons. He was named NL Manager of the Year in 2019.
During the 2024 season, the Padres went 93-69 and held the best record in baseball (56-29) after June 18. The team was tied for the best batting average in all of baseball (.263) and ranked sixth with 1,453 strikeouts.
Shildt provided a statement after he received the extension, referring to late Padres owner Peter Seidler’s goal.
“I am honored to continue leading this team toward Peter Seidler’s vision of bringing a World Series championship to San Diego,” Shildt stated. “In collaboration with our players and coaching staff, we are committed to building on our success, serving our community and the city of San Diego, and delivering a winning team to our incredible and deserving fan base.”
With Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill, Luis Arraez and Manny Machado leading the way and the trio of Dylan Cease, Michael King and Yu Darvish on the mound, the Padres are primed to contend after being a win away from the NLCS in 2024.
