Arsenal handed Nico Williams January transfer boost as failed summer move revealed

The summer transfer window is over and Arsenal managed to get two new signings on deadline day. Goalkeeper Neto arrived from AFC Bournemouth before Raheem Sterling secured a sensational loan move from Chelsea.

Mikel Arteta’s focus is now on football and working with the squad he has. Saturday’s frustrating draw with Brighton & Hove Albion leaves the Gunners two points off Liverpool and Manchester City.

Nico Williams drop future hint

Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams has revealed that he is currently happy at the club but refused to shut the door on a move in the future. The Spain international was linked with a big-money move to Arsenal in the summer after his impressive Euro 2024.

Speaking after Athletic’s 1-0 loss to Atletico Madrid on Saturday, he told DAZN: “There were approaches from many clubs. I did well at the Euros and that’s a great showcase.

“I had many clubs to choose from but my heart is with Athletic Club. I’m happy here and I’m very happy here. God knows what will happen in the future.”

football.london says: Nico Williams’ transfer case is a strange one because he’s quality and he’s viewed as the perfect long-term target for Arsenal. With his £47million release clause, it would be a massive investment.

“However, the signing of Sterling on deadline days means the Gunners have committed to a short-term fix. Williams isn’t the sort of signing that the club are likely to sanction in the winter window, instead being a marquee signing in the summer.

“The problem Arsenal face is that Barcelona are always going to fancy their chances of signing Williams. It’s just whether Arteta can get there first.”
