Warriors-Mavs Showdown: Can Warriors Overcome Mavericks in Klays’ Reunion Game
Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry represent two sides of the coin regarding how players act in reunion matches. While one player remains coy about the anticipated matchup, the other can’t hide his emotions. On Tuesday, the Golden State Warriors will host the Dallas Mavericks in the Emirates NBA Cup debut.
In addition to the implications of what it would mean to win the first matchup of the in-season tournament, closure, and family business is on the line. Curry wasn’t ready for the emotions of talking about or thinking of playing his former Splash Brother, Thompson.
“Don’t do that to me… I’m not ready for this, man. It’s going to be a lot to look forward to. I’m excited to see him [Thompson],” Curry said following Sunday’s 127-116 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder.
However, Thompson sees Tuesday’s contest as “another regular season game in November,” noting the higher implications of the reunion coming in an Emirates NBA Cup matchup.
Regarding the actual game, and not solely the emotions behind it, the Warriors come into Tuesday with an 8-2 record compared to the 5-5 Mavericks.
Dallas is exceptionally banged up, given that Dereck Lively II and P.J. Washington Jr. are out due to injury. In addition to the home crowd advantage, the Warriors primarily have a healthier team.
Yet, despite such advantages, the Warriros’ defense must keep Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving at bay, as the latter star erupted for 43 points against the Denver Nuggets on Sunday.
