Big Name on Move: Phillies Put All-Star Third Baseman on Trade Market

Significant changes could be made to the Philadelphia Phillies roster this offseason. After falling short in the playoffs the past three seasons, the front office has a lot to think about.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, third baseman Alec Bohm is on the trade block because the Phillies are “looking to shake up their team.”

Bohm is a beloved player in Philadelphia, and many fans would be puzzled if he were to get traded. However, if the Phillies want to return to the World Series, he may find himself on another team in 2025.

Let’s explore the benefits and downsides of trading Bohm.

Run production

Since debuting with the Phillies in 2020, Bohm has been one of the club’s best run-production players. Giving him up and his RBI-producing abilities could be a huge mistake.

Bohm tallied 97 RBI in 2023 and 2024. Philadelphia has other players on the roster who bring in their share of runs, but Bohm has been the most productive in the regular season.

In 2024, Bohm tallied 15 home runs and a .280 batting average across 143 games. The postseason was a different story. Bohm would go 1-for-13, good for a .077 batting average.

Age

Bohm is 28 years old and still has much growing to do. As the Phillies don’t have a backup third baseman, trading him away may not be a good idea.

Philadelphia has been linked to longtime Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman, a free agent, as a possible replacement. Bregman is 30 and will be 31 shortly after the 2025 season. Will the Phillies find it beneficial to keep the younger of the two?

There’s also 20-year-old top prospect Aidan Miller. Although Miller’s natural position is the hot corner, he probably won’t see the majors for a few more years. Miller is currently in Double-A with the Reading Fightin’ Phils.

Frustration

There have been plenty of games where Bohm didn’t play well, and his frustration showed on the field. He would spike his helmet or bat and yell NSFW words.

Every baseball player has games where they don’t play well and get frustrated. Showing it on the field is unnecessary.

It went so far as to result in Bohm being benched in Game 2 of the NLDS against the New York Mets due to his struggles. Manager Rob Thomson needed some “energy” in the lineup, so he turned to Edmundo Sosa.

If Bohm wants to be a Phillie next season, he must mature.
