A New Challenger Emerges: Ben Johnson Faces His Toughest Rival Yet

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson has solidified himself as one of the best play-callers in the NFL. Johnson led the Lions to a top-five offense the past two seasons and completely turned quarterback Jared Goff’s career around. On Thursday, the NFL awarded Johnson the assistant coach of the year award.

Johnson has been given a lot of major praise from coaches, analysts, and players throughout the past few seasons. The Bears have also been given a lot of praise for hiring Johnson. And now, one of the greatest coaches of all time has called Johnson one of his biggest coaching rivals and also praised the Bears head coach.

Andy Reid has nothing but good things to say about the Chicago Bears coach

In Thursday’s press conference, defending Super Bowl champion, current AFC champion, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid had nothing but great things to say regarding Johnson.

Per Jeff Skversky, Reid was asked by reporters who his top coaching rivals are, and he put Johnson among the best.

“I’ve enjoyed watching the Lions this year, and the job their offensive coordinator did there. And now he’s the head coach in Chicago.”

It’s a great sign for things to come in Chicago for one of the best play-callers of all time and one of the winningest coaches in NFL history to praise Johnson for how he did in Detroit. Johnson is clearly a highly-respected coach around the NFL.

Johnson’s strengths as a play-caller include adapting to the strengths of the quarterback, making adjustments when needed, and a lot of creativity. His play-calling tends to be very aggressive as well, similar to how coach Reid calls plays.

A Ben Johnson vs Andy Reid coaching matchup would be huge for the NFL

The Bears will not be playing against the Chiefs in the 2025 regular season, but when it eventually happens there is no doubt the NFL could put it as a primetime game for Sunday Night Football.

Johnson’s offense vs Reid’s offense could more than likely turn into a complete high-scoring shootout. A QB duel between Caleb Williams and Patrick Mahomes would be a must-watch game in the future.

Hopefully, Johnson will bring that intense play-calling and high-scoring offense over to Chicago in 2025.
