Angel Reese attends Bears game just a week after donning Ravens jersey in Baltimore

Chicago Sky rookie star Angel Reese was on site for the Chicago Bears’ big win over the Carolina Panthers, wearing a Bears jersey featuring the #5 she wears for the Sky. On the surface, there’s not much to say about the situation other than exactly that, but Reese’s activity last football Sunday, there’s a bit more to it.

Just a week ago, Reese was in Baltimore to watch the Ravens play the Buffalo Bills. Similarly to her outfit for the Bears game, she was in a #5 Ravens jersey with “Reese” on the nameplate.

This has caused a slight uproar with fans, many of whom believe that Reese needs to pick a fandom and stick with it. However, Reese has fought back, stating that she isn’t on any kind of “NFL tour,” justifying her support of both teams.

It’s hard to argue with Reese’s logic. Plenty of professional athletes root on the other teams in their city, as the athletes form a cross-sport community of sorts in many cases. This has been especially prevalent in Boston, where championships are the rule rather than the exception, and each team’s players often show up to the others’ playoff games to support their city.

At the same time, giving up a lifelong fandom rooted in one’s childhood hometown is no easy thing to do. Even though Reese is participating in the sports culture of her new city, as so many other athletes tend to do, it would be unrealistic to imagine that she’d give up her connection to where she’s from.

Either way, teams are 2-0 thus far when Reese shows up with their jersey on, so perhaps fans should do a bit less nitpicking about which jerseys Reese chooses to wear and more lobbying to make sure that their team is next. Considering she lives in Chicago, the Bears might be able to count on her assistance in weeks to come, and as they look to compete led by quarterback Caleb Williams, another star rookie like Reese, they should welcome all of the help they can possibly get.

The biggest question just might be who Reese would root for if the two teams met in the Super Bowl. It’s one thing to support both teams when they’re not actively facing one another, especially since the Ravens play in the AFC while the Bears are in the NFC, so their paths rarely cross.

However, in the event that the two teams find themselves on the same field, especially if the stakes are high, Reese needs to know exactly where her priorities lie. Then, her answer might carry some consequence.
