Bears Land JT Barrett: Former Ohio State Star Joins Coaching Staff as QB Coach

Ben Johnson has done an immaculate job filling out his staff with the Chicago Bears. On Friday, Antwaan Randle El and Al Harris joined Johnson, assuming roles as assistant head coach and wide receivers coach, and defensive pass-game coordinator, respectively. In addition, Johnson convinced another one of his former offensive coaches in Detroit to follow him to the Windy City.

Per reports , former Detroit Lions assistant quarterbacks coach JT Barrett is joining the Bears as the team’s quarterbacks coach.

Barrett played his college ball at Ohio State University and had a cup of coffee in the NFL. After a short-lived professional career, Barrett jumped into coaching, joining the Detroit Lions’ coaching staff in 2022 as an offensive assistant. In 2023, Barrett assumed the role of assistant quarterbacks coach and held that role for two seasons. Now, in just three years time, Barrett is a full-time position coach.

Barrett joins the list of former players who are now on Ben Johnson’s staff. The former Lions OC is taking a page out of Dan Campbell’s book, bringing in well-respected coaches who were once players. They’re easy to identify with and keep players and other coaches accountable. Accountability was something the Bears lacked in previous seasons, but that shouldn’t be an issue now with this coaching staff.
