Breaking: $170 Million Man, Bregman Drops Social Media Bombshell: Mets Fans Go Wild Over…

The New York Mets have emerged as one of the most aggressive teams in baseball this winter and fans might be getting a little carried away.

After signing Juan Soto to a historic $765 million contract, agreeing to reunite with Sean Manaea on a $75 million deal, trading for Jose Siri and other moves, the Mets are clearly looking to build on their National League Championship Series run in 2024. But they still have a hole at first base, as slugger Pete Alonso evaluates his free agency options.

As a result, the team could be in the market for star infielder Alex Bregman. Mets fans seem to be hoping that’s the case, at least, as they reacted to a recent holiday tweet from Bregman.

Bregman’s choice to describe 2025 as “amazing” might seem innocuous to most, but some users on X noted that the adjective is associated with the Mets. Legendary manager Casey Stengel nicknamed the franchise the “Amazin’ Mets” as a tongue-in-cheek description of their astounding incompetence at the time and the moniker has stuck.

Following Bregman’s post, Tim Boyle of FanSided noted that some Mets fans are “hoping Alex Bregman dropped a clue he’s coming to Queens.”

“New York Mets fans grabbed a pipe, put a deerstalker hat on their head, and deduced Alex Bregman was definitely coming to Queens after a tweet he shot off yesterday,” Boyle wrote. “With 2025 so close you can smell its breath, the word choice of ‘amazing’ had fans wrongfully coming to the conclusion that Bregman sent out a secret signal of his ultimate destination.”

“I think it’s telling,” wrote one user in response.

“Amazing Mets?” asked another.

Though the link is highly speculative, one can understand a Mets fan’s interest in Bregman. He has a career .272/.366/.483 slash line with two All-Star nods, a Silver Slugger Award and a Gold Glove Award in nine big-league seasons. Adding him could allow the Mets to move Mark Vientos to first base, or Bregman might be willing to take over Alonso’s position himself.

But he’s set to earn a major payday this winter, which might explain why he’s yet to find a new home. Jon Heyman of the New York Post projected Bregman would earn a seven-year, $170 million contract going forward.

If the Mets can find a way to make room for Bregman’s potential salary for next season and beyond, they would certainly set fans up for an amazing 2025.
