Breaking: 49ers’ New QB 1: Josh Dobbs Steps Up as 49ers Starter vs. Cardinals
The San Francisco 49ers signed quarterback Josh Dobbs in the 2024 offseason. The 49ers faced another loss over the weekend, dropping to a 6-10 record. With one game left of the season, Dobbs will be getting the start against the Arizona Cardinals.
Josh Dobbs Getting the Start
In the fourth quarter of the game against the Detroit Lions, 49ers starting quarterback Brock Purdy was ruled out with an injury. Dobbs played one drive, scoring a rushing touchdown. Following the game it was revealed that Purdy has a right elbow contusion with nerve inflammation. This injury rules Purdy out for the final game of the 2024 NFL season. The good news is Purdy has all offseason to recover and it is not serious.
Dobbs remained the third quarterback for most of the 2024 season. This made him a healthy scratch, only allowed to enter if both Purdy and Brian Allen went down with an injury. This season, Dobbs completed just three passes for 35 yards, according to Pro Football Reference. His one rushing attempt went for seven yards and a touchdown against Detroit.
Dobbs signed just a one-year deal with San Francisco. He had a strong 2023 season with the Minnesota Vikings and the Arizona Cardinals. This final game against his former team could be a way for him to once again show the league that he can compete before hitting free agency in March.

Dobbs was selected in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Dobbs has played for numerous teams throughout his stint in the NFL. His best season came in 2023 when given the opportunity to start for the Cardinals and Vikings.
The San Francisco 49ers and the Arizona Cardinals will kick off at 4:25 p.m. EST on Jan. 5. The game will be held at State Farm Stadium in Arizona. With neither team making playoffs, it is the final time the two will play this season.
