Breaking: Aaron Rodgers’ Latest Remarks Fuel Speculation About His Potential Exit from Jets
The New York Jets have nothing left to play for this season after losing their eighth game in nine tries on Sunday, Dec. 1. So, by extension, neither does quarterback Aaron Rodgers — save for perhaps pride.
However, Rodgers may need to catch on with a new franchise in 2025 for one final ride in order to restore his image and end an otherwise illustrious career on a higher note.
The quarterback spoke with media members following his team’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks, during which he addressed the increasing likelihood that New York will bench him for the remainder of the campaign.
And should that happen, it is highly unlikely that Rodgers ever starts — or even plays — for the Jets again.
“Yeah, I don’t know. We’ll figure that out when we have those conversations,” Rodgers said after a reporter asked him directly about whether he will remain QB1 for next week’s contest against Miami Dolphins. “I’ll have a conversation with [head coach Jeff Ulbrich] if that’s what he’s thinking.”
As far as Ulbrich’s stance on Rodgers’ status as the starter, he also answered a direct question about whether the quarterback is set for a demotion.
“No,” Ulbrich said during his postgame press conference. “Not as of today.”
That is far from a ringing endorsement in Rodgers’ favor, and it comes not so far on the heels of reports that owner Woody Johnson wanted the coaching staff to bench Rodgers for backup QB Tyrod Taylor approximately one month into this season.
Rodgers completed 21-of-39 passes for 185 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception in his team’s loss to the Seahawks Sunday — an exceedingly mediocre stat line, the likes of which have become all too common for the quarterback this year. Rodgers has thrown for 2,627 yards, 19 touchdowns and 8 interceptions in 12 starts in 2024, of which the Jets have won just three.
Rodgers has one year remaining on his contract, though Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported in late November that the Jets are considering cutting Rodgers — a decision that could be made in the offseason, or perhaps before the 2024 campaign concludes.
