In a quietly strategic move aimed at fortifying their rotation, the Atlanta Braves have acquired starting pitcher Erick Fedde from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for two minor league prospects and cash considerations.

The trade, finalized late Monday night, gives Atlanta a reliable, innings-eating right-hander with international success and a resurgent MLB track record. Fedde, 32, was 3–2 with a 3.39 ERA through six starts this season with Chicago, continuing the career renaissance he began after returning from a stellar year in the KBO in 2023.

Braves President of Baseball Operations Alex Anthopoulos praised Fedde as “an ideal mid-season addition” who fills a growing need amid injuries and inconsistency in the Braves’ rotation.

“We’ve been monitoring Erick since his return from Korea,” Anthopoulos said. “His command, competitiveness, and ability to keep hitters off balance make him a great fit for our staff and clubhouse. This is the kind of move that wins you games in August and October.”

Atlanta, currently sitting atop the NL East but dealing with rotation uncertainty due to the early-season struggles of Bryce Elder and the continued absence of Kyle Wright, sees Fedde as a stabilizer — a veteran arm who can deliver five to six quality innings every fifth day.

Fedde is expected to slot into the back end of the rotation immediately and could make his Braves debut as early as Friday against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

For Fedde, the trade represents another chapter in a unique career. A former first-round pick by the Nationals, he struggled to gain traction during his initial stint in the majors. After a dominant 2023 season with the NC Dinos in Korea, where he won the KBO Pitcher of the Year Award, Fedde returned to MLB with sharpened mechanics and confidence.

His 2024 campaign with the White Sox — 12 wins, a 3.51 ERA, and 164 strikeouts — put him back on the national radar and earned him a two-year deal with Chicago. Now, he finds himself in a playoff race with one of baseball’s most formidable clubs.

“I’m excited and grateful,” Fedde said via phone shortly after the trade was announced. “The Braves are a first-class organization with a winning culture. I’m ready to do my part.”

The White Sox, who are once again in sell mode after a slow start to the season, received Double-A catcher Drake Baldwin and right-handed pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach — both ranked in the Braves’ top 20 prospects. Chicago GM Chris Getz noted the return as “strong value for a veteran with one year of team control remaining.”

In Atlanta, the move is all about October. With a potent offense led by Ronald Acuña Jr., Matt Olson, and Austin Riley, the Braves already have the firepower. Now, with Fedde in the fold, they gain a steadying arm and postseason-tested maturity to complement frontline starters Max Fried and Spencer Strider.

As the calendar creeps toward the dog days of summer, the Braves just got a little bit deeper — and a little bit tougher.
