The Philadelphia Eagles first started using the “Tush Push” in 2022, and it quickly became one of the most successful ways to gain a first down or touchdown in short-yardage situations.
Still, it’s been years since it became a popular play, and opposing teams still can’t figure out how to stop it. However, running back Saquon Barkley’s personal numbers have been burned by the play his fair share of time.
This season, Barkley has been tackled at the one-yard line 11 times, and quarterback Jalen Hurts has followed up, scoring a passing or rushing touchdown 10 of those times.
In Philadelphia’s most recent game against the Panthers, Barkley was mic’d up, and we got to see his reaction to Hurts scoring on the “Tush Push” after the running back was tackled just one yard from the endzone.
It greatly showcases Barkley’s team-player attitude and willingness to share his success.
Besides, even without being the one to score in these short-yardage situations, he’s found himself firmly in the mix to possibly be the first running back to win MVP since Adrian Peterson in 2012.
This season, Barkley has accumulated 266 carries for 1,623 yards, 11 touchdowns and 124.8 rushing yards per game. He’s also been effective in receiving the ball, with 29 receptions, 267 yards and 2 touchdowns.
