Breaking: Cubs Trade Seiya Suzuki for $313 Million Superstar in Massive Deal
As currently constructed, the Chicago Cubs don’t need a third baseman. They have youngster Matt Shaw ready to make his debut and Justin Turner as a platoon option or a starter, depending on how they view him.
Turner getting daily at-bats over Shaw would be a questionable decision at this stage of his career.
And let’s not forget some of the moves the Cubs have made in recent years. Jed Hoyer did what he needed to do this offseason, but every indication before this suggested that he could’ve been fired if things didn’t go as planned.
If the Cubs struggle again in 2025, don’t expect him back.
Because of that, the Cubs could be looking to make another blockbuster deal, and there so happens to potentially be a third baseman available if things go south with the Boston Red Sox in Rafael Devers.
Devers commented about not playing third base with Alex Bregman, and Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report instantly put together trade packages for teams that could use him.
For his Cubs proposal, he had them moving Seiya Suzuki and Moises Ballesteros.
“You can’t fault Bregman for saying no, whereas you can fault the Cubs for pivoting to Justin Turner. He was a third baseman once upon a time, but he’s now 40 years old and strictly a 1B/DH type. Devers is thus a better roster fit for the Cubs, and this trade would see him swapped for a player who doesn’t fit them so well anymore. That is Suzuki, whose status as the de facto DH is potentially an awkward one,” Rymer wrote.
This would be a steal of a deal for the Cubs.
However, for the Red Sox, taking back a questionable outfielder and a young prospect with no big league experience for one of the better players in Major League Baseball doesn’t help them accomplish their goals of competing right now.
