The New York Jets are five games away from what many expect to be a full organizational overhaul. The team already needs a new head coach after firing Robert Saleh earlier this season, and general manager Joe Douglas was let go last month.
Aaron Rodgers has expressed a desire to return to the Jets – if he doesn’t retire – but it doesn’t seem that the interest is mutual. The Jets appear to be prepared to let Rodgers go, which could make the future difficult for their prized mid-season acquisition, wide receiver Davante Adams.
Adams preferred a trade to the Jets because Rodgers was there, hoping that they could recapture the magic they once had in Green Bay with the Packers.
That hasn’t happened, and Adams finds himself on another losing team, in arguably a worse situation than he was in with the Las Vegas Raiders.
With the reality of a Rodgers-less Jets team becoming more likely with each passing week, Adams addressed his future with the franchise this week.
“That’s a great question and I truly don’t have the answer to it right now. I would love to be a part of this football team,” Adams said on Wednesday when asked what the future holds.
“I love these guys, I came in day one, I was welcomed…It’s a business and there’s a lot of pieces contractually. Obviously with Aaron’s future and a lot of things I can’t control. Just gonna finish this year off strong. Hopefully, we do enough to where everybody’s feeling like it’s the right thing to do for us to stay here. After this year, we’ll assess and figure it out.”
Adams has two years left on his current contract, but he carries a cap hit of more than $35 million in both seasons. The Jets will have to determine if they’re going to get $70 million in production out of the wide receiver, or if that money is better spent elsewhere to improve the team.
