With the World Series now, unfortunately, in the rearview mirror, it’s time to start looking ahead to the 2025 season. Juan Soto, of course, is the big fish on the market, making it the second time in three years a Yankees right fielder leads the free agent market. Behind him, however, is a mixture of top starters (Corbin Burnes, Blake Snell) and talented-but-flawed hitters.
Last winter, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Shōta Imanaga led an international free agent class that was one of the most-hyped in recent memory. While this year’s crop isn’t necessarily going to have the same pedigree — it truly all depends on whether Roki Sasaki will be posted, which is no guarantee — there are a number of potential impact players who could be traveling across the Pacific this winter.
In the biggest no-brainer move of the winter, the Yankees exercised their team option for closer Luke Weaver. The right-hander was one of the breakout stories of the 2024 campaign, as he became one of the game’s premier relief pitchers just one year after having the worst ERA in baseball. Weaver will receive $2.5 million next season — a fantastic deal for a relief pitcher of his caliber.
