The last two weeks have demonstrated a singular area where the Dallas Cowboys can claim they have the edge over nearly ever other team in the NFL. While they do not boast a league-leading defense, offense or quarterback play, they do have a weapon in their arsenal that can single handedly flip a game.
KaVontae Turpin’s electrifying speed made him an attractive piece for the Cowboys when they signed him from the UFL in 2022. He may not make headlines every week, but has shown he possesses the ability to make deciding plays when he is on the field.
In Dallas’ most recent matchups against the Houston Texans and Washington Commanders he provided apparent reminders to his talents.
Against Houston, Turpin caught a pass in the open field before darting away for a 64-yard score. The following week, he let the ball trickle between his legs before scooping it up at his own one-yard line and turning upfield to go 99-yards for a score that ended up winning the game for the Cowboys.
For that reason, it’s no surprise Turpin reiterated his belief that he is “the fastest person on the planet.”
Taking a step back and looking at the Cowboys, they are 4-7 with six games to go this season. Barring an extreme turnaround, it’s likely they will fall short of a postseason appearance and look evaluate their roster.
The Dallas offense certainly needs some upgrades around Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, but whichever way this team decides to go with its changes, Turpin will need to be considered throughout the process.
The former USFL MVP is a restricted free agent after this year, so Dallas has some contractual control here; a second-round tender would cost $4.89 million – which seems like a bargain.
Turpin does not have the extensive route tree or jump ball-securing acumen of other receivers. However, when he is on the field, special teams or offensively, he is a threat that must be accounted for every down.
Not many teams enjoy such a luxury and as long as he lines up with the Star affixed to his helmet, the Cowboys have at least one decided advantage on the field.
