Breaking: Kyrie Irving Rules Out Coaching Future in NBA
Kyrie Irving was asked whether a potential coaching career was in his future. He responded by saying he doesn’t know whether he will be a coach in the NBA and claimed that he would be more comfortable with some type of consultant role. Irving mentioned that he prefers a flexible schedule, which wouldn’t be possible in a coaching role, and talked about his desire to start an academy post-retirement.
“I don’t know if I’m going to coach at this level, man. I’m more of like a consultant type. I like to make my own hours. You know my personality, I’m not trying to be forced to do anything. You’re telling me I’ve got to show up at 9 AM, I’m like ‘Uh, maybe 9:08 or something like that’.”
“But nah man, once I’m done I’ll definitely have one of the best academies of all time. Skills training, mental, spiritual, emotional, and bringing in some of the experts. Not only in the game of basketball but in different fields and bringing a lot of youth together.”
“A lot of the young oldheads, making sure we’re paying homage to the legends. After basketball, it’s going to be so much fun but right now, I’m enjoying this just as much.”
Irving seems really passionate about being involved in basketball after his retirement, but he seems more enticed about working with the young, up-and-coming players, and working with them to round them out, not just as players, but as individuals as well.
Irving is one of the best players in the NBA, and many herald him as one of the most skilled players of his generation, so to not see him translate that into a coaching career is a shame. But Irving should do what makes him happy, and if starting an academy makes him happy, he should pursue that.
Kyrie Irving’s Important Upcoming Season
Kyrie Irving will have the chance to redeem himself this season, after coming up short in the 2024 NBA Finals. Playing against the Celtics, Irving capitulated against his old team and had to watch his former teammates Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum lead the franchise to an NBA championship.
Irving, who has slotted into a veteran leader role on the team, while still delivering All-Star-level production, has been enjoying a career renaissance since joining the Mavericks. Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd spoke fondly of Irving’s powerful leadership and how it has helped the team greatly.
Irving is coming off a strong season with the Mavericks, where he averaged 25.6 points, 5.2 assists, and 5.0 rebounds. With the addition of Klay Thompson, the Mavericks are now considered one of the favorites to emerge from the Western Conference and reach the NBA Finals once again.
If the Mavericks do make a strong run in the West this year, Irving will have to play a key role for them and be a star. The Mavericks tip off their NBA season on Thursday, as they play the San Antonio Spurs at home.
