Los Angeles Rams pass rusher Byron Young, a former Tennessee Vols standout, was punished by the NFL on Saturday for his game-winning play in LA’s win against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 8.
Young, who is in his second season with the Rams, sacked Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold in the end zone late in the fourth quarter, resulting in a safety which pushed the Los Angeles lead to 10. The safety essentially ended any hopes the Vikings had of coming back to win/tie the game.
While attempting to pull Darnold to the ground, Young actually grabbed the quarterback’s face mask, which should’ve resulted in a 15 yard penalty and an automatic first down.
The officials, however, said they never saw the infraction which is why no flag was thrown.
Despite no penalty being called on Young, the NFL fined the former Vol $7,014.19 on Saturday.
Ouch. Young may be earning an NFL salary, but that’s still a decent chunk of change.
Though I’m sure he’d trade paying that fine for the win any day.
