Breaking: Red Sox Star Says No to Top Prospect on Opening Day Roster
The Boston Red Sox are primed to take the next step in 2025. With three consecutive seasons without posting a winning record, this looks to be a return to their winning ways over the past two decades.
They have added significantly to their major league roster, including trading for starting pitcher Garrett Crochet and signing infielder Alex Bregman.
Also, the Red Sox boast one of the top farm systems in all of baseball. That is headlined by what many have dubbed the “Big Three”, which consists of infielders Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell as well as outfield Roman Anthony.
Anthony is currently the No. 2 prospect in baseball according to multiple outlets such as Baseball America and MLB.com. Not to be outdone, Campbell was named 2024 Minor League Player of the Year by Baseball America.
With both of these players (as well as Mayer) reaching Triple-A Worcester last season, it seems their path to Boston is imminent.
Not everyone thinks these players should break camp. When asked if he would have these players make the opening day roster, Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas was very pointed with his comments.
“No. I think we have some grown men up there right now they need to iron some things out.” Casas stated. “We need to show up and see what that first little taste of us all together looks like.”
With the addition of Bregman, it does cast doubt on the future of the infield. There has been a public back and forth regarding Rafael Devers moving off of third base to potentially DH, which would in theory open a spot for Campbell to play second base (assuming Bregman takes over at third).
This will be a pivotal spring to see these young players against major league talent. And even if all three start the season in Worcester, they will be knocking at the door almost immediately.
