The Boston Red Sox opened the 2025 season with a 5-2 win over the Texas Rangers on Thursday. Aside from the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets, they may have been the most productive team this past offseason.
They signed Alex Bregman, Walker Buehler and Aroldis Chapman and even traded for Garrett Crochet. But they might be busy again when the trade deadline comes around on July 31.
On ESPN’s Jesse Rogers’ executive survey, St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley was listed as one of the most likely players to be traded in July.
Perhaps Boston could take a look at boosting its bullpen if St. Louis falls out of contention.
“I think the Cardinals will do really well at the deadline for Helsley,” an executive predicted. “They were smart to wait, unless he has a bad first half.”
Chaim Bloom, who will take over as president of baseball operations for the Cardinals next year, recently served in the same role with the Red Sox and helped them build one of the strongest farm systems in all of baseball.
This could allow St. Louis to land some solid prospects.
For Boston, it would allow them to add another proven reliever. Liam Hendriks is currently out with elbow inflammation, and Aroldis Chapman isn’t used as a closer quite as frequently anymore.
Helsey saved 49 games last year, setting a Cardinals franchise record and even earning National League Reliever of the Year honors. Having him closing out games at Fenway Park down the stretch would give the Red Sox a great chance to do some damage in October and win their first title since 2018.
With St. Louis expected to sell, Helsley will likely be one of the most sought-after pitchers on the market. We’ll see if Boston makes a move.
