Caleb Williams has not lived up to expectations. The first overall draft pick was supposed to lead the Chicago Bears to the playoffs.
Instead, the Bears are in last place in the NFC North while fellow rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels has transformed the Washinton Commanders into a contender.
Some people are even suggesting that William’s disappointing play is the reason offensive coordinator Shane Waldron was fired on Tuesday.
Williams has been labelled by many as the worst of the four starting rookie quarterbacks: he, Daniels, Drake Maye and Bo Nix.
Daniels has clearly been the pick of the bunch through 10 weeks of the 2024-25 NFL season, as First Things First’s Nick Wright explains.
“Jayden has played better than all of the rookie quarterbacks by a mile. He was, up until two weeks ago, a very legitimate MVP candidate,” he said.
But Wright completely disagrees with the narrative that Williams has been outplayed by Maye and Nix to this point.
“This idea that Caleb’s been the worst of the starters is just not true. We can show you what the other quarterbacks (Maye and Nix) have done and they’re almost identical.

“The records are about identical – Drake hasn’t played as much but extrapolate it. The yards per game – almost identical. The passer ratings – almost identical. The team PPG – almost identical.
“Now, we can say Caleb has better weapons – agreed. I think a worse offensive line than Bo but probably a better one than New England.
“I just don’t think it’s accurate to say Caleb is playing the worst of the rookies because then you’d have to throw out the three games he played which were the best of those three.”
Wright was referring to the wins against the Los Angeles Rams (24-18), Carolina Panthers (36-10) and Jacksonville Jaguars (35-16), in which Williams played well.
Unfortunately, the Bears QB has since underwhelmed in defeats to the Commanders, Arizona Cardinals – which Wright called a must-win game – and New England Patriots.
