Bregman’s Mania Hits Wrigley! Cubs Fans Go Wild at Prospect of Landing Superstar Third Baseman
The Chicago Cubs’ pursuit of Alex Bregman could give the team a star power duo that hasn’t been seen at Wrigley Field in years.
As MLB.com releases its annual top 100 players list, the Chicago Cubs have a solid showing in the bottom half of the list. Shota Imanaga (64), Seiya Suzuki (73), Justin Steele (88), Ian Happ (92), and Dansby Swanson (93) have all cracked the list, pointing to a solid foundation of reliable players for the 2025 campaign.
For the first time since the 2021 trade deadline, when the Cubs commenced full rebuild, the team has a perennial All-Star caliber player in Kyle Tucker. The right fielder is in the top 20 on MLB’s list, and is generally considered one of the most well-rounded players in the league. His above-average ability to hit for power, contact, run the bases, and play Gold Glove defense provides the kind of offensive talent the team has lacked for multiple years.
The team also has the opportunity to add to this promising offensive by signing Bregman. The two-time All-Star is ranked 37th on MLB’s list and is coming off three straight seasons of posting at least a 4.0 bWAR.
Bregman would immediately raise the floor of a potent Cubs team that is already in a great position to win the National League Central this year.
The two-time World Series champion would theoretically be the team’s second-best hitter behind Tucker, and the duo’s presence in the lineup would take pressure off less experienced hitters. The Cubs will be heavily relying on Pete Crow-Armstrong and Michael Busch, who are primed for full-time roles in their sophomore seasons. Top prospect Matt Shaw could also slot in at second base if Bregman decides on Chicago, as Nico Hoerner is seen as a prime trade candidate to shed payroll.
These young hitters would greatly benefit from Bregman being in the middle of the batting order, and hopefully help prevent prolonged offensive slumps that bogged down the team’s potential in 2024. Bregman’s excellent defensive abilities would also give the Cubs Gold Glove-caliber defense at nearly every position on the baseball diamond.
The Cubs still remain in the mix of Bregman’s rumored suitors. ESPN’s Buster Olney predicted on Monday that the third baseman would likely sign with either Chicago, the Detroit Tigers, or the Boston Red Sox in the coming days.
