Bruins anthem singer to perform, help fundraise at Thunderbirds game
The man who sings the National Anthem at Boston Bruins home games is coming to Springfield for a special performance before Saturday night’s Thunderbirds game. If you have been to a Bruins game at TD Garden over the last several years, you have heard the voice of Todd Angilly.
“I got a lot into performing solo and then got really engaged in opera and the classical style of singing and would do a lot of voice competitions,” Angilly explained.
Angilly has been working at the Garden since 1999 and had different positions, including bartending. In fact, Angilly told Western Mass News that he was bartending one night during the 2017-2018 season when he was asked to fill in last minute to sing the National Anthem before a game. That experience led him to audition for the job full-time for the 2019-2020 season and he got it.
“I picked up a pizza and it was late. I got home, everybody was in bed, and I sat there kind of eating the pizza by myself, watching TV, and trying to figure out what had just happened,” Angilly said.
Now, for the first time ever, Angilly is going to be singing the National Anthem at the MassMutual Center when Thunderbirds take on the Providence Bruins on Saturday night, plus he will be bartending for old time’s sake, bringing this experience full circle.
“It’s going to be great to kind of…throw some of the dust off and get the mixology skills back into play. It’s been a while,” Angilly noted.
He will also be helping raise proceeds for Square One, a Springfield nonprofit meant to provide opportunities for children and families build a foundation for lifelong learning and growth.
“We need to create these pathways for families and for children to have the opportunities that they need to succeed,” Angilly said.
Angilly will be available to meet fans on the concourse from 6:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. before his very important performance around 7 p.m.
