Chiefs’ Secret Weapon: Kansas City’s Plan to Utilize Carson Wentz in Broncos Showdown Revealed
When the Kansas City Chiefs take the field against the Denver Broncos on Sunday afternoon they’ll do so without a number of their key starters.
Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes is among those riding the pine this weekend after the team locked up the No. 1 seed in the AFC on Christmas. In his place will be former Philadelphia Eagles star quarterback Carson Wentz, who is ready for his opportunity.
“I’m going to prepare to go out there and win and then have a good performance with this offense,” Wentz told reporters earlier this week. “I got one shot last year and so for me it’s just not taking these chances for granted and having fun with it [and] cutting it loose.”
Cutting it loose is exactly what head coach Andy Reid is hoping for, according to NFL insider James Palmer.
“Obviously how the game plays out dictates what’s called, but don’t be surprised if you see Carson Wentz slinging it today in Denver. My understanding is Andy Reid would like to let Wentz rip it a bit,” Palmer said on social media.
The former Eagles star quarterback is “excited” about the opportunity to finally play football after sitting on the bench all season long.
“I think it would be tremendous just getting reps,” Wentz said. “Obviously preseason is helpful, but that was even limited and seems like another lifetime ago already. This will definitely be helpful if needed in whatever capacity down the stretch there in the playoffs. But quite frankly, I’m just excited to get out there and play ball.”
Wentz will have the opportunity to eliminate the Denver Broncos from playoff position with a win on Sunday afternoon.
