Chiefs’ Super Bowl Hopes Take a Major Hit: Travis Kelce Slapped with Crushing Blow by NFL Ahead of Super Bowl
Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is going to enter the fifth Super Bowl of his career with lighter pockets than he might prefer.
The NFL dinged Kelce to the tune of a little more than $11,000 for his part in an on-field altercation with Buffalo Bills linebacker Jordan Phillips at the two-minute warning near the end of the second quarter of the AFC championship game last weekend.
Kelce’s penalty came for taunting Phillips during the altercation, while the league penalized Phillips for “unnecessary use of the helmet” after he used it to bang into Kelce during the mini-dustup.
Phillips’ actions cost him $6,722 and referees also threw a flag on him on the play. Kelce did not incur an in-game penalty for his behavior. Kelce will not face any suspension or miss any time in Super Bowl 2025, which is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 9, in New Orleans.
He and his Chiefs teammates will travel south to Louisiana in an attempt to win their third consecutive title, which would make history in the NFL’s Super Bowl era. A victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in a rematch from two years ago, which Kansas City won by three points, would mark the fourth title for the Chiefs in the Kelce/Patrick Mahomes era.
Kansas City opened as 1.5-point favorites over Philadelphia in the neutral site contest, and that line remains the same with approximately one week remaining until kickoff.
