Closer Conquest: LA Emerges as Top Suitor for Brewers Elite Closer in Blockbuster Deal
The Los Angeles Dodgers do not appear to be resting on laurels after winning the World Series. They already made a huge splash in free agency, landing prized starting pitcher Blake Snell. Now, they seem to be looking at shoring up the bullpen ahead of the 2025 season.
One of the most sought-after relievers as the Winter Meetings heat up has been Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams.
According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the Brewers are receiving an “overwhelming” amount of interest from teams across Major League Baseball. CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson named the Dodgers and New York Yankees among several teams interested in the closer’s services.
Williams was outstanding in 2024, albeit in limited fashion. The power-righty suffered stress fractures in his back during spring training and was placed on the 60-day injured list.
Upon his return in late July, all Williams did was dominate.
He pitched in 22 regular season games, amassing 38 strikeouts in just 21 2/3 innings. His 15.8 K’s per 9 ranked among the best in baseball.
However, the 30-year-old from St. Louis was more than a punch-out machine. He finished with a 1.25 ERA to go with a 0.97 WHIP.
The Dodgers in 2024 boasted a powerful offense that led to a championship. But that has not deterred the organization from realizing the bullpen weakness. Last season, Evan Phillips led the team with 18 uninspiring saves. Daniel Hudson was next with 10. Neither pitcher posted a sub-3.00 ERA.
Injuries marred the bullpen as well. Walker Buehler, who was a World Series hero coming out of the pen, is rumored to be on his way out.
So, the Dodgers would be well served by adding an elite arm.
Williams has one year remaining on his current contract and is expected to make approximately $8 million through arbitration. That is unless the Brewers decide to trade the former NL Rookie of the Year.
