Connor Joe To Padres: The Perfect Fit! San Diego Closing in on Signing the Coveted Slugger
A feel-good story could be coming to a ballpark near you this year, as Connor Joe appears to be signing with the San Diego Padres. Details of the contract are unknown at this time.
Joe isn’t going to fill Jurickson Profar’s (or probably even Donovan Solano’s) shoes but this signing doesn’t hurt. If it works out, then it’s a great story and if it doesn’t, well there probably wasn’t much money attached to it anyway.
The USD alum is coming off a two-year stint in Pittsburgh (256 games), posting a slash line of .238/.330/.396 with 20 home runs. Last season, Joe played 79 games at first base and 49 in the outfield.
As it sits right now, he might be competing for the starting left field job with Tirso Ornelas, Brandon Lockridge and Mike Brosseau. I highly doubt that’s what A.J. Preller wants though.
It seems like Preller would go the David Peralta or trade route for that left field spot, as guys like Tommy Pham ($4 million, Pirates) and Ramon Laureano ($4 million, Orioles) have come off the board in recent days and clearly doesn’t have much money to work with.
