Cowboys’ Fortune Changes: Hometown Rival Star’s Retirement Plans Give Dallas a Boost
The Philadelphia Eagles ended the Los Angeles Rams’ season in the Divisional Round with a 28-22 win at Lincoln Financial Field.
But they might have ended more than that.
Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford isn’t getting any younger, and the Super Bowl winner is reportedly considering hanging up the cleats for good.
And if he does? Teams like the Dallas Cowboys – who in 2025 will be trying to climb up from a third-place finish in the NFC East – will be perfectly happy to have him out of the way.
The 36-year-old is closer to the end of his career than the start of it, and once there are rumors about an impending retirement, it doesn’t take too long for it to come to fruition.
One person who would know more than most about Stafford’s plans is his wife, Kelly. Speaking on The Morning After podcast, she gave her thoughts on Matthew potentially retiring.
“When you take your team from one and four, to where they were, that is something to be extremely proud,” Kelly said. “So if he wants to be done, I’m going to fully support it. I’m going to be excited about it. I’m going to be excited, that there’s a next chapter in our lives that we’re going to begin.
“If he doesn’t want to stop now I’m going to be excited too because I want to watch him. I would love to watch him again. But yeah it’s going to be solely his decision. I’m not going to be the one to pressure.”
So the ball is in Stafford’s court, and maybe the way the season ended against the Eagles, and given how close the Rams came to upsetting Philadelphia, maybe he might want to have one more go around.
As it happens, Dallas is 2-0 in the regular season against Stafford in his Rams career. But he’s also been a Super Bowl winner … something that can’t be said of the Cowboys, the adopted hometown team of the QB who once starred at Highland Park High School near downtown Dallas.
If not, Stafford has had a very productive NFL career, which includes a Super Bowl with the Rams, and he can ride off into the sunset after another stellar season.
Kelly says she won’t pressure him into a decision and if Stafford does retire, that will be one less star quarterback the Eagles will have to contend with.
