Cubs Legend Defiant Cry! Three Word Update Amid Cancer Battle Inspires Hope
Chicago Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg is staying optimistic during his latest cancer battle.
Sandberg revealed in December his prostate cancer had relapsed and spread to other organs. The relapse came only months after Sandberg announced he was cancer-free last May.
The Hall of Fame second baseman initially revealed his diagnosis in January 2024.
Sandberg is back at Cubs camp as a guest instructor. He missed spring training last year while undergoing treatment.
“I’m feeling good,” Sandberg said.
“It feels good to be out here, fresh air, sunshine, around the guys,” Sandberg continued, according to the Cubs’ official website. “I mean, it feels really good.”
Sandberg said he’ll alternate between Arizona and Chicago, where he is undergoing treatment. The Hall of Famer sounds like he’s in good spirits, noting he played golf Saturday.
“A consistent battle, but I’m doing well,” Sandberg said.
The Cubs have frequently supported Sandberg during his cancer battle. He threw out the first pitch at the Cubs’ home opener last April.
Sandberg also became the fifth Cub to receive a statue outside Wrigley Field last June. He joined Fergie Jenkins, Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, and Ron Santo.
Sandberg reunited with former teammates Mark Grace and Shawon Dunston at Cubs camp Saturday. The three join Jenkins and Rick Sutcliffe in mentoring the Cubs’ current crop of young players.
Dunston and Sandberg met with rookie third baseman Matt Shaw during Saturday’s practice. The top prospect certainly came away impressed from his conversation with two Cubs greats.
“That was really cool,” Shaw admitted. “It was cool to get to talk to them and just know I have their support in my corner.”
