Cubs-Mets Blockbuster! Stunning Trade Announced as Mets Reacts to Crushing Injury Blow
The New York Mets had arguably the biggest MLB offseason of any team. Signing superstar outfielder Juan Soto to a historic 15-year, $765 million contract, New York also re-signed its slugging first baseman Pete Alonso.
Bolstering their pitching staff, the Mets brought in Clay Holmes after his four-year run with the New York Yankees, turning him into a full-time starting pitcher for the first time in his MLB career.
While the Mets made some big moves this offseason, they also made a marginal move to bring in 2018 first round draft pick Nick Madrigal to compete for the backup shortstop position behind Francisco Lindor.
Suffering a left shoulder injury on Sunday, Madrigal was scheduled for an MRI on Monday, and the results are not great for the former Chicago White Sox prospect. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters on Monday that Madrigal suffered a fracture in his left shoulder.
“Nick Madrigal’s MRI showed a fracture in his left shoulder. He’ll go for a CT scan for more info, but he’ll be out ‘for a long time,’ per Carlos Mendoza,” MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reported on X.
Following this news, New York has transferred Madrigal to the 60-Day injured list and announced a trade with the Chicago Cubs.
“We have acquired OF Alexander Canario from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for cash considerations,” the Mets announced on X. “In a corresponding move, INF Nick Madrigal has been placed on the 60-Day IL.”
ESPN’s Jesse Rogers first reported New York was acquiring Canario, and the deal was made official by the Mets minutes later when they announced Madrigal was headed to the 60-Day IL.
