Cubs On The Prowl! Chicago Cubs Set to Land $56 Million Star in Blockbuster Trade
The Chicago Cubs did not have quite the offseason that fans were hoping to see from them. It wasn’t a bad offseason, but Jed Hoyer and company did not get as aggressive as they could have been.
Acquiring star outfielder Kyle Tucker was the highlight of the offseason. However, the Cubs backed up that major move by shipping Cody Bellinger to the New York Yankees.
Heading into the 2025 MLB season, Chicago has a good chance to win the NL Central. The Cubs look to have improved, but it’s far from a guarantee until they can prove it on the diamond.
That being said, Chicago is being linked as a potential trade suitor for a high-impact starting pitcher.
There are rumors starting that the Miami Marlins could be open to trading Sandy Alcantara. If that ends up being true, the Cubs could be a potential destination.
Matt Higgins of SportsNaut has made the suggestion that Chicago could get involved.
“Adding Alcantara to complement Shota Imanaga, Justin Steele, and Jameson Taillon would instantly give Chicago one of the NL’s most formidable starting staffs,” Higgins wrote.
“While prospect Matt Shaw likely remains off-limits, a competitive package featuring James Triantos, Owen Caissie, and Moises Ballesteros could tempt Miami in a division where bold moves could completely reshape the wide-open NL Central race.”
Alcantara missed all of the 2024 season, but he had a decent year in 2023. He started 28 games, going 7-12 with a 4.14 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP, a 3.1 K/BB ratio, and 184.2 innings pitched.
His big season came back in 2023, when he compiled a 14-9 record to go along with a 2.28 ERA, a 0.98 WHIP, a 4.1 K/BB ratio, and 228.2 innings pitched in 32 starts.
At this point in time, there is no concrete report connecting the Cubs to Alcantara, but he’s a name worth keeping an eye on as the season progresses.
