Dodgers Shocking Trade Talks: Tony Gonsolin on the Block in Stunning Move
The Los Angeles Dodgers have no shortage of talent on the roster, and it is for that very reason that manager Dave Roberts admitted it would be difficult for some of the younger players — especially pitchers — to get their chance to shine in the show this year.
And he’s right. The Dodgers have eight big league-caliber starting pitchers Clayton Kershaw, Shohei Ohtani, Blake Snell, Roki Sasaki, Tyler Glasnow, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Dustin May, and Tony Gonsolin . The All-Star, right-handed Gonsolin suffered a back injury in March while lifting weights, per manager Dave Roberts, and won’t be ready for the start of the season. As a result, analysts are exploring the idea of Gonsolin being on the trading block.
MLB analyst Zach Pressnell of Newsweek believes the New York Yankees should look to try and trade for Gonsolin.
“But it wouldn’t be crazy to think the Dodgers could explore the idea of trading Gonsolin when he returns from injury. And the Yankees would be the perfect landing spot,” Pressnell said. “New York would need to part ways with quality prospects in order to land the righty. But it’s the kind of deal that could work out for both teams. If New York ships a package centered around Everson Pereira to the Dodgers in exchange for Gonsolin, both teams would get better.”
And to be fair, this proposed trade could make sense. As previously mentioned Los Angeles has eight big-league starters so it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Dodgers look to trade just one. Now the Yankees would need to part ways with quality prospects to land the RHP, but this is the kind of trade that could benefit both teams.
Gonsolin — a Vacaville, California native — has a pitching style characterized by his slider. It’s an extreme flyball pitch compared to other pitchers’ sliders, is much harder than usual, and has primarily 12-6 movement.
Gonsolin is slated to earn around $5.4 million in 2025 and is under team control for the 2026 season. He has a career regular-season ERA of 3.19.
