Emotional Moment for Astros Top Prospect: Move to Tears After Life Changing Decision
Moments like these really tug at your heartstrings.
Shortly following the announcement Tuesday that No. 1 prospect Cam Smith had made the Houston Astros opening day roster, the team released a video of the moment he was informed.
After a brief speech, Houston Manager Joe Espada calls Smith’s family in to the clubhouse to deliver the great news in person. Smith, upon seeing his family enter the room, breaks down into tears.
Seconds later, with tears still streaming down his face, the 22-year old got up from his seat and hugged his mom to applause from his new teammates.
Following the release of the heartwarming video – which currently has over one million views on ‘X’ alone – users flocked to social media to offer their thoughts.
“Crying like a baby,” a user on ‘X’ posted.
“That is so heartwarming,” another user said. “I can feel the proudness from his family.”

Smith, who played his college ball at Florida State, was the 14th overall selection by the Chicago Cubs in last July’s draft. He played in a mere 32 minor league games in the Cubs system before being dealt to the Astros in the Kyle Tucker trade this past December.
This spring, Smith tore the cover off the ball, hitting .342/.419/.711 with four home runs and a team-leading 11 RBI in 15 games. A third baseman by trade, he also received looks in right field in the preseason and performed admirably.
So much so that Smith is expected to start in right field Thursday afternoon when the Astros open against the New York Mets at Daikin Park. First pitch is scheduled for 4:10 p.m. ET.
